Best U21 players: Lyon’s Tolisso the top performer in September

Corentin Tolisso was ORTEC Sports’ best U21 player last month. The French midfielder featured in all the league matches for Olympique Lyon, with the highlight coming in the match against Bastia. Tolisso confirmed the 2-0 win with a goal on the 88th minute.

Even though his pure stats might not be as exciting as others, Tolisso stands out for his constant involvement in the game (75.8 actions on average), as well as for the ability to make key passes (1.5 per game). Overall, he earned a 7.9 grade through September, which puts him at the top of our list for this month. Coming from the club’s youth ranks, Tolisso shows as well that Lyon are still a leading football academy in Europe.

Coming a close second, Chancel Mbemba (7.8 grade) also deserves a place among the best. Newcastle’s young centre back is emerging as a key element on defense, playing alongside the veteran (and team captain) Fabricio Coloccini. With 1.7 blocked goal attempts per game and an impressive 64% of duels won, Mbemba has surely had a very good September.

Still in his teens, Vitesse’s Kevin Diks is working hard to become the best right back in the Netherlands. Co Adriaanse has gone further to say that he would already be in the national team if he was playing for a bigger club. Nevertheless, the 19-year old has shown a great ability to read the game – proven by the fact that 73% of his regained possessions came from interceptions. At the same time, having 1.7 key actions per game reveals his offensive prowess. Diks had an average grade of 7.2 in September.

The last member of this fantastic four is Niklas Süle (7.1 average). The German centre back has played every single minute so far in this season’s Bundesliga. Even with Hoffenheim’s early struggles in the standings, Süle has managed to make a good impression. Confident when it comes to passing the ball (92% completion rate), he is also contributing with 8.8 clearances per game.
