Team of the Season – Premier League #30

Jul 27, 2020 | News, Team of the Week

As we are preparing for the continuation of the Europa league and Champions league, the Premier league was completed last weekend with Liverpool crowning themselves as champions. To celebrate, ORTEC Sports collected the best players from the entire Premier league season based on their total statistics this season.

For this round, the Team of the Season consists of the most aggressive passers, based on our build up-statistics. These are the players with the highest average completed passes on the opponent half per match over the entire season. To qualify to be included in these statistics, a player must have played in at least half the matches this season (19). For the Goalkeepers position, we looked at the % of shots on goal that got saved by the keeper this season.

Optimize your stats

– Manchester City is heavily represented in the team with 6 out of 11 players being citizens. This is a staple of their control focused, or tika taka, playstyle. As they are one of the few teams in the league that play this way, they dominate the season in terms of completed passes.

– Liverpool, the champion of the Premier League, has three players on the team. This too is indicative of their playstyle, which has evolved to be more and more control focused during the season under Jürgen Klopp’s management.

– The best scoring player this season is Oleksandr Zinchenko of Manchester City, with an average of 38.8 complet ed passes on the opponent half over 19 matches.

Rodri, or Rodrigo Hernández, also from Manchester City, has completed the highest % of his passes on the team. He averaged 35.9 completed passes over 35 matches, which were 93% of his total attempted passes on opponent half.

– If we look at % completed passes on opponent half outside of the team however, we see Liverpools’ left centre back, Virgil van Dijk, with 94% of his passes completed over a total of 38 matches.

– The keeper, Tottemham Hotspurs’ Hugo Lloris, made an average of 4.7 saves per game over 21 games, saving 79% of all attempts on his goal.

As a bonus, here are the top 5 of players who completed the most passes on opponent half over the entirety of the Premier League season:

ORTEC Sports Tactic Tree

The ORTEC Sports Team of the Week is released every Monday and will present the best performing players on a specific aspect of the Tactic Tree. The Tactic Tree is used to categorize statistics into the two main stages of a game: ‘being in possession’ and the counterpart ‘possession opponent’, both divided into 4 subcategories.

Every week we pick one statistic that is used in a subcategory and based on that statistic the best scoring players on each position will be presented in the team of the week.
