Team of the Season – Serie A #31

Aug 3, 2020 | News, Team of the Week

As we are preparing for the return of both the Europa League and the Champions League, last weekend the Serie A played out its final matches in their 38th round. As we did last two weeks, ORTEC Sports collected the best players over the entirety of the Serie A season based on specific statistics to create our Italian team of the season.

For this Team of the Season, ORTEC Sports looked at our build-up statistics to find the players with the highest average first passes in possession received. For players to qualify they must have played at least 20 matches this season. Because a keeper receiving the first pass is more of a defensive action These are the players who received the most first passes in possession.

A first pass in possession received shows how the player in question creates space for himself, asks for the ball, and is seen by teammates as the best option to start an attack.

Optimize your stats

– Napoli has the most players on the team with two.

– The best scoring player this week is Mario Rui of Napoli, with an average of 10.8 first passes received per match over 24 matches. Stefano Sabelli is right behind him, with an average of 9.9 first passes received over an impressive 9.9 matches.

– This Serie A seasons champions, Juventus, do not have any players on the team. The right back Juan Cuadrado received their most first passes in possession, at an average of 9.5 per match.

– We can also look at who made the most first passes in possession on average. In that case that would be Cristian Romero from Genoa with an average of 12.3 first passes made over 30 matches.

When we look at the total of first passes received over the whole season, the following players lead the way:

ORTEC Sports Tactic Tree

The ORTEC Sports Team of the Week is released every Monday and will present the best performing players on a specific aspect of the Tactic Tree. The Tactic Tree is used to categorize statistics into the two main stages of a game: ‘being in possession’ and the counterpart ‘possession opponent’, both divided into 4 subcategories.

Every week we pick one statistic that is used in a subcategory and based on that statistic the best scoring players on each position will be presented in the team of the week.
