Team of the Week: Europe #18

Jan 25, 2021 | News, Team of the Week

This week’s team of the week consists of players from the last round of the Ligue 1, Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga as the Premier League only had some catch-up matches last weekend.

The stat we are focusing on this week is possession regain in play based on our Regain statistics. That means that this is the team who will never let you keep a ball if they can help it.

Optimize your stats

– There are two German squads this week who provide the most players to the Team: Borussia Dortmund and FC Köln. With 6 players in total hailing from a German squad the Team is very German dominated.

– The best scoring player this week is Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund, with 21 possession regains in play.

– For the Goalkeeper this time around we decided to stick with the stat of possession regained instead of going with a save score, as for a keeper regaining possession is an important tool to defend your goal. VFL Wolfsburg’s squads goalkeeper, Koen Casteels, regain the most possession in play for his team last weekend with a total of 12 times.

– We can also look at possession regained in play by interception. The teams top scorer Mat Hummels regained possession the most often via interception with a total of 20 regains from interceptions of his total 21 regains in play.

– Another statistic we can focus on is possession regained in play by duel. In this stat we have a five-way tie with 6 regains via a duel. The tie is between: Paulo Otavio, Luca Ceppitelli, Remo Freuler, Míchel and the TotW’s Hiroki Sakai.

When we look at the whole season, the following players lead the way in the Spanish, German, Italian and French leagues for possession regain in play:

ORTEC Sports Tactic Tree

The ORTEC Sports Team of the Week is released every Monday and will present the best performing players on a specific aspect of the Tactic Tree. The Tactic Tree is used to categorize statistics into the two main stages of a game: ‘being in possession’ and the counterpart ‘possession opponent’, both divided into 4 subcategories.

Every week we pick one statistic that is used in a subcategory and based on that statistic the best scoring players on each position will be presented in the team of the week.
